Industrial use 2NaCl+2H₂O=== energization===2NaOH+H₂↑ +Cl₂↑ to produce caustic soda, chlorine and hydrogen. (Caustic soda is sodium hydroxide) [1]
Chlorine gas reacts with hydrogen gas: H₂+Cl₂===ignition or light===2HCl, and the HCl gas generated is hydrochloric acid when dissolved in water.
Chlorine reacts with sodium hydroxide solution: 2NaOH+Cl2=NaCl+NaClO+H2O. The resulting NaClO has strong oxidizing properties, and its salts can be used as bleaching agents and disinfectants.
In the above experiment of electrolysis of saturated brine, chemical reactions can occur between the electrolysis products, such as NaOH solution and Cl2 or Cl ion contact will generate NaClO and NaCl, H₂ and Cl₂ mixed with fire or light can explode. In industrial production, it is necessary to avoid the mixing of these products, and the reaction is often carried out in a specially structured electrolytic cell with an ion exchange membrane (no negatively charged chloride ions or chlorine gas is allowed to pass).
